Do you struggle with back, shoulder or neck pain?

If so, you could be making your problems worse every single time you go to bed. Cheap or old mattresses can actually increase back, neck or shoulder pain. And, sleeping on an old mattress can actually bring on back or neck pain to previously healthy people.

On average, you spend 24 years of your life in bed which is more than you spend in the office or in the car. Isn’t it time you changed your mattress to ensure that you remain healthy?

Making back, shoulder and neck pain worse

Most of you will sleep on ordinary mattresses which you may have owned for a number of years. The greatest danger with these mattresses is that, in time, they have a tendency to sag. This means that they end up placing your body in an unnatural and unhealthy position.

With extra stress and strain being placed on your body, ailments such as back, neck and shoulder pain can occur. And, if you already suffer with muscular pain, sleeping on an old mattress can actually make your condition worse.

Time for a new mattress?

If you are worried about back and neck pain, it is time to look at your old mattress. Is it as firm as you need it to be? Are there signs of sagging when you lie on it? Is your body in an unusual position when you sleep, putting stress on your back and shoulders?

There is a wide range of mattresses on the market and many of these are designed to provide additional, long lasting support for your back. Many use memory foam and latex foam to offer you and your back maximum support and comfort. Others use variants of the spring and coil system.

Some mattresses also feature increased support in the central third to give your body greater support where it needs it most. These may be particularly useful for people who suffer with lower back pain.

Many mattresses are also hypoallergenic, meaning that they may help you if you are an allergy sufferer or if you suffer with asthma.

Even if you did buy a good mattress, it is still advised that you change it on a regular basis. This will ensure that you are always benefiting from the support and comfort that your back, neck and shoulders need.

Don't let your bed damage your back

Even if you are completely healthy, it could be time to change your mattress. Chronic back pain is a debilitating condition and a recent survey found that it was the cause of more sick days in the UK than any other condition. If you sleep on an old mattress, back or neck pain could be waiting for you just around the corner.
