Tips for People With Insomnia

A lot of people have problems with falling asleep at night, but they don't understand why. If you have problems falling asleep, before reaching for that sleeping pill, look at this list of tips. You may be causing your insomnia without even knowing it. Getting a good night's sleep might be as easy as having a routine or watching what you eat.

Routine – The first thing that you want to do is make sure you're sticking to a schedule. Many parents know that getting their baby on a schedule is important, but it's just as important for adults to have a schedule too. Don't change your bedtime and your waking time even for the weekends – having a schedule and sticking to it is going to help with going to sleep each night.

Watch food and drink intake – The second thing that you should do is make sure that you are not eating or drinking a lot right before you go to bed. If you eat late, make sure that it's at least two hours before going to bed. If you have heartburn, avoid eating foods that are fatty or spicy. If you drink too much before you go to bed, you may find that you are kept up by constant trips to the bathroom.

Exercise on a regular basis – The third thing that you should do is to make sure you're excising daily. This can tire you out and make you sleep easier. But for some people, exercising right before bed can have the opposite effect. So you have to do some experimenting and see what works best for you.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine at night – The fourth thing that you want to do if you are having trouble falling asleep is to avoid stimulants such as these. You shouldn't drink anything with caffeine in it for at least 8 hours before you go to sleep. Although caffeine isn't stored, it can take quite a few hours for eliminating the affects of it. Despite the fact that alcohol is thought to work as a sedative, it's been shown that it will disrupt sleep.

Change your bedroom – Finally, look at your bedroom. Is it dark, comfortable and cool? If not, then your bedroom might be problem. Adjusting the temperature, humidity, noise level, and lighting might just make getting to sleep a lot easier for you. Things like eye covers, earplugs, blackout curtains, additional blankets, humidifiers, and other things to help make the room a better place for sleeping.

Sometimes getting to sleep isn't easy but the tips above are designed to help you to get a better night's sleep. There is no need to turn to pills when there are so many other things that you can do in order to get a good night's sleep.

Back Pain and Mattresses - Changing Your Mattress Can Make a Difference!

It's estimated that as much as 70-80% of the population suffers from some kind of back pain - whether it's from their work or an injury, or another reason that they may not be aware of yet. What a lot of people don't know is that helping to reduce back pain can be as simple as changing their mattress. There are four things that those with back pain should remember about back pain and mattresses.

Support

When it comes to back pain and mattresses, the first thing to remember is that the mattress needs to support the heaviest parts of the body where there are natural curves. This means it needs to support the shoulders, the head, and finally the hips. Also remember that you need a good, supportive pillow for your head.

Divan Bases

There's a reason that most mattresses are sold with Sprung Divan Base (Sprung Edge Base) – putting your new mattress on a worn out Divan base will not give the same results as buying the mattress and Divan Base together.

Space

When you are choosing your new mattress to help with back pain, keep in mind that you are going to move around a lot while you are asleep. If you do not sleep alone, think about choosing a mattress that is either King Size or Super king sized. This will give the two of you ample room to move around.

Time

You want to remember that when it comes to back pain and mattresses is that you want to give yourself plenty of time to go looking at the mattresses. You want to have time to lie down on the prospective mattress and see how it feels. If you are not going to be the only person sleeping on that mattress, make sure that your partner goes with you as well so that the mattress you buy is large enough for the two of you.

If you are having back pain, it might be a good idea to buy yourself a new mattress, especially if you have had your current mattress for a long time. You may find that you are getting a better night's sleep and you are waking up with less back pain. Sometimes a good night's sleep is all you need and it can make a world of difference.

You spend about a third of each day in your bed, and when you don't get a good night's sleep or you wake up with pain, you aren't able to function well that day. Making a change to a different mattress may be what you need to do.

Are You Sharing Your Bed Or Office With Bugs?

For years, bed bugs were thought to be a problem firmly rooted in the past. However, recent research from America has shown that bed bugs are back with a vengeance. And, it's not just beds that they inhabit…

Bed bugs - a 'national problem'

According to Richard Pollack, Ph.D., an entomologist at the Harvard School of Public Health, bed bugs are once again proving to be a 'national problem' in the US. As well as living in your bedroom, bed bugs are now also turning up in shops, offices and other public locations.

According to Forbes magazine, in the last few weeks there have been confirmed bed bug invasions in several high profile New York locations including the Brooklyn District Attorney's office, the offices of Elle magazine and a Times Square cinema.

Why are bed bugs back?

Michael Potter, Ph.D., an entomologist at the University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture, believes that bed bugs have returned thanks to greater social mobility and international travel. In addition, there have been changes in pest control which includes using less effective pesticides.

In addition, Potter also says that there has been a 'total loss of awareness and lack of vigilance'. "People in the old days knew to check their hotel beds, their clothing when it was back from the laundry and what their kids brought home from camp. We have a whole new generation [that thinks] stuff doesn't bite you when you're sleeping. We opened the door and allowed them to come roaring back."

Taking bed bugs into work

Harvard scientist Richard Pollack explains, "For as long as we've been working in offices and factories, we have been accompanied by stowaways - cockroaches will crawl into our pockets, spiders will go for a ride. Bed bugs are the latest thing to appear on people's radar."
Bed bugs are carried into your office or workplace on your clothes, bag, wallet and coat.
Whilst bed bugs like living in your bed and your sofa at home, there are places at work where they can thrive. "They tend to prefer fabrics and wood, but they can be drawn to warmth and end up almost anywhere," says Potter.

How to stop them

Bed bugs look like small apple seeds and their droppings appear like flakes of pepper. You may also note that you have small bites on your legs and arms. Bite symptoms vary, from nothing at all to welling and itchy red welts. However, you should remember that bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases.

If you find bed bugs, it is vital that you thoroughly clean the infested room. Make sure your mattress is thoroughly vacuumed and cleaned and you could also consider placing your mattress under plastic or in a mattress bag. As a last resort, you could replace an old mattress with a new one.

Glee, Arabs and NASA: 10 Things You Never Knew About Mattresses

You will have spent around 16 years lying on one by the time you are 50 years old. But, how much do you know about your mattress?

Here are ten fantastic facts you never knew about mattresses.

The word 'mattress' is derived from Arabic words meaning 'to throw', 'place where something is thrown' and 'mat, cushion'. During the Crusades, Europeans adopted the Arabic tradition of sleeping on cushions thrown on the floor. The word 'materas' eventually entered the English vocabulary after being used in Europe.

Whilst many modern mattresses are made of memory foam, the substance was actually invented by the American space agency, NASA. It was developed in the mid 1960s to improve the safety of cushions in aircraft and in rockets.

Box springs were invented in the late 19th century to make mattresses less lumpy. The most common of these springs are called 'Bonnell coils'. First adapted from buggy seat springs of the 19th century, they are still prevalent in less expensive mattresses.

Different mattresses may be more suitable for you depending on how you sleep. In general, firm mattresses are recommended for stomach and some back sleepers, soft mattresses are recommended for side sleepers, and medium mattresses are recommended for the majority of back sleepers.

Mattresses date back to the Neolithic period. Beds were raised off the ground to avoid dirt and pests. It is thought that the first mattress probably consisted of a pile of leaves, grass, or straw, with animal skins over it.

The largest standard mattress size in the UK is a 'Super King'. A Super King mattress measures 72 inches by 78 inches, or a massive 182cm by 198cm.

The most expensive mattress in the world is on sale at Bloomingdales department store in New York for a staggering $33,275. It the Kluft 'Beyond Luxury Palais Royal', a 15.5 inch thick mattress made of wool, cashmere, silk, mohair, latex foam and Jacquard damask. It has 2,000 hand sewn pocket springs and comes with a 20 year warranty - which makes the price just 33p per night.

Mattresses should be regularly rotated. A new mattress should be rotated once a month for the first six months and once every 2 to 3 months after that. Double sided mattresses should be alternately flipped and rotated. Folding and bending of the mattress should be avoided if possible, as should heavy wear in one spot.

The twelfth episode of the popular US drama series Glee was called Once Upon a Mattress. In the episode - the most watched of the series in America - the students appear in a TV advertisement for a local mattress and bedding store in an attempt to improve their reputation by becoming local celebrities.

A quality innerspring mattress will need to be replaced every 7 to 10 years. Memory foam and latex models should last between 10 and 20 years, depending on the manufacturer, the quality of the bedding, and the vigorousness of use.

Are You Damaging Your Back In Bed?

Do you struggle with back, shoulder or neck pain?

If so, you could be making your problems worse every single time you go to bed. Cheap or old mattresses can actually increase back, neck or shoulder pain. And, sleeping on an old mattress can actually bring on back or neck pain to previously healthy people.

On average, you spend 24 years of your life in bed which is more than you spend in the office or in the car. Isn’t it time you changed your mattress to ensure that you remain healthy?

Making back, shoulder and neck pain worse

Most of you will sleep on ordinary mattresses which you may have owned for a number of years. The greatest danger with these mattresses is that, in time, they have a tendency to sag. This means that they end up placing your body in an unnatural and unhealthy position.

With extra stress and strain being placed on your body, ailments such as back, neck and shoulder pain can occur. And, if you already suffer with muscular pain, sleeping on an old mattress can actually make your condition worse.

Time for a new mattress?

If you are worried about back and neck pain, it is time to look at your old mattress. Is it as firm as you need it to be? Are there signs of sagging when you lie on it? Is your body in an unusual position when you sleep, putting stress on your back and shoulders?

There is a wide range of mattresses on the market and many of these are designed to provide additional, long lasting support for your back. Many use memory foam and latex foam to offer you and your back maximum support and comfort. Others use variants of the spring and coil system.

Some mattresses also feature increased support in the central third to give your body greater support where it needs it most. These may be particularly useful for people who suffer with lower back pain.

Many mattresses are also hypoallergenic, meaning that they may help you if you are an allergy sufferer or if you suffer with asthma.

Even if you did buy a good mattress, it is still advised that you change it on a regular basis. This will ensure that you are always benefiting from the support and comfort that your back, neck and shoulders need.

Don't let your bed damage your back

Even if you are completely healthy, it could be time to change your mattress. Chronic back pain is a debilitating condition and a recent survey found that it was the cause of more sick days in the UK than any other condition. If you sleep on an old mattress, back or neck pain could be waiting for you just around the corner.

6 Types Of Mattress That You Should Consider

What sort of mattress is on your bed?

Gone are the days when all mattresses were the same. In the 21st century, there are traditional mattresses, mattresses designed to support you if you have back problems and even mattresses that were first used by the American space agency, NASA.

Before you buy a mattress, read our useful guide to the six main types of mattress on the market today.

Coil Sprung

Whilst there have been many innovations in mattress technology, many mattresses are still manufactured using the traditional 'coil sprung' method. These feature coiled wires that are linked together in a metal net frame.

Example: <a href="/layezee-true-micro-quilt-double-mattress.html" title="View the Layezee True Micro Quilt Mattress - Double (4'6").">Layezee True Micro Quilt Mattress.

Continuous Sprung

A 'continuous spring' mattress is made from coil springs linked together in once chain, rather than the standard criss-cross metal connection. The continuous spring runs from head to toe which helps to distribute body weight up and down the bed, giving you and your partner increased support.

Examples: <a href="/silentnight-ortho-star-double-mattress.html" title="View the Silentnight Ortho Star Mattress - Double (4'6").">Silentnight Ortho Star Mattress, <a href="/sealy-ortho-best-double-mattress.html" title="View the Sealy Ortho Best Mattress - Double (4' 6").">Sealy Ortho Best Mattress.

Pocket Sprung

A 'pocket sprung' mattress features individual springs enclosed in separate flexible fabric pockets. These pockets are attached to adjacent pockets which allow each spring to move independently. This helps to create a more responsive feel.

Examples: <a href="/rest-assured-eliot-1000-double-mattress.html" title="View the Rest Assured Eliot 1000 Mattress - Double (4'6").">Rest Assured Eliot 1000 Mattress, <a href="/sealy-silver-better-double-mattress.html" title="View the Sealy Silver Better Mattress - Double (4' 6").">Sealy Silver Better Mattress.

Natural Latex

Latex is an excellent material for a mattress as is it is elastic, durable and has hypo-allergenic features that can help allergy sufferers.

A natural latex mattress offers excellent support as its elasticity means that pressure is distributed evenly. It recovers its shape straight away when pressure is removed.

Examples: <a href="/sealy-classic-better-double-mattress.html" title="View the Sealy Classic Better Mattress - Double (4' 6").">Sealy Classic Better Mattress, <a href="/rest-assured-verona-1000-double-mattress.html" title="View the Rest Assured Verona 1000 Mattress - Double (4'6").">Rest Assured Verona 1000 Mattress.

Memory Foam

Memory Foam was first used by NASA to help astronauts during rocket launches. It responds to your body shape and gently cushions your body to provide a restful, relaxing night's sleep.
The cellular structure of memory foam is extremely dense. The memory foam cells are spherical in shape and are temperature sensitive which means that they react to your body's shape, weight, and heat. Since the memory foam moulds itself to you, there is no need to toss and turn when falling asleep.

A memory foam mattress distributes your bodyweight more evenly than any traditional mattress. By relieving pressure, a memory foam mattresses reduces and helps prevent a range of aches and pains including neck pain, rheumatism, aching joints, arthritis, sciatic pain, circulatory problems and back pain.

Example: <a href="/silentnight-mattress-now-memory-double-mattress.html" title="View the Silentnight Mattress Now ! Memory - Double (4'6").">Silentnight Mattress Now! Memory.

Combination

These mattresses combine pocket springs, coil springs or continuous springs with memory foam. You benefit from the properties of memory foam as well as the firmer and more traditional support from the spring system.

Example: <a href="/silentnight-breeze-double-mattress.html" title="View the Silentnight Breeze Mattress - Double (4'6")">Silentnight Breeze Mattress.

The World's Naughtiest and Priciest Bed

If you are looking for something a bit different for your bedroom, and you have a cool £50,000 to spare, then you could be the proud new owner of the world's most expensive, and most erotic, bed.

It has been revealed this week that the InDecent Bed will go on sale from August in the 101 year old, high class department store Selfridges. But, you will have to be quick as only 25 of the limited edition beds have been made available.

The InDecent Bed

The InDecent Bed is made by the American company Gallery of Wonderful. What makes this bed different is that the bed designers will hand stitch an erotic image of you and your partner onto the headboard. Close up it looks like a classy mosaic design, but as you move further away you will see yourself in the throes of passion with your partner or, alternatively, by yourself in a sexy pose.

For your £50,000, you and your partner will be flown to Los Angeles to meet a top American photographer. The likes of Sante D'Orazio, Guido Argentina or Warwick Saint (whose portfolio includes Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Pamela Anderson) will shoot your provocative photos in a sexy and glamorous LA photo shoot.

Your chosen photo will then be airbrushed before it is painstakingly hand stitched onto the headboard in dozens of small, individual panels. This process itself will take over three months.

World's most expensive bed

The bed retails at $86,000 (£50,000) and you can buy one from department store Selfridges. You will have to be quick, though, as only 25 of the beds are to be made available.
However, if you are looking for something a little cheaper, for just £9,000 you can buy a limited edition version of the InDecent Bed featuring an artistic shot of an attractive, nude model.

Selfridges spokesman Jude Morgan said: "If an Englishman's home is his castle, then an Englishwoman's home is surely her bed. Buying the InDecent Bed is a once in a lifetime statement of love."

The luxury InDecent Bed is manufactured from solid high gloss oak and it will be available from late August, 2010.

So, if you have a spare £50,000 and you fancy a headboard featuring an erotic pose of you and your partner, the InDecent Bed could be exactly what you are looking for…

40 Million Reasons You Should Consider A Silentnight Bed

Are you looking for a new bed or mattress?

If so, the chances are that you will be considering a Silentnight mattress. Britain's most well known supplier of bedroom furniture, Silentnight manufactured an astonishing 40 million beds in the first 60 years of their history.

Before you choose your bed, you should consider a Silentnight product. Here's why.

The biggest UK manufacturer

The Lancashire based company are the UK's largest manufacturer of branded beds. The company makes approximately 1,800 beds every day and a Silentnight bed is sold every 60 seconds. If you lay all the beds that the company has sold over the last five years end to end, you'd get all the way to Rome and back.

Founded in 1946, the company has been at the forefront of bed innovation for over six decades. Silentnight invented the 'ultimate spring' and 'Miracoil' systems and their new products continue to lead the way.

Great range

Whilst you might just associate Silentnight with beds, they supply everything you and your family need for a good night's sleep:

Divan beds - a great range of divan beds in everything from single to 'super king' sizes

Children's beds - from the company's 'My First Beds' range with a selection of funky headboards to 'chillout' beds for teenagers

Mattresses - a huge range of mattresses with choices including memory foam, latex and the company's patented Miracoil continuous spring system

Headboards - a range of high quality, affordable headboards in various styles

Mattress technology

In the late 1990s, Silentnight perfected and patented their superb Miracoil system for beds and mattresses.

This system features one continuous spring that runs from head to toe. This distributes your body weight more evenly up and down the bed, providing more support. In addition, it ensures that both you and your partner benefit from the support you need whilst sleeping, irrespective of your size and weight.

You will probably have seen the Silentnight advert featuring a hippo sleeping alongside the duck - both enjoying restful sleep thanks to the Miracoil system!

Many of Silentnight's beds combine the Miracoil system with other materials, such as memory foam and latex. This gives you all the properties of these other materials combined with the benefits of the continuous spring system.

Affordable

One of the main reasons that you should consider a Silentnight bed or mattress is that they offer superb support and quality at an affordable price.

One in Three Brits Share Their Beds With A Furry Friend

Winnie the Pooh once told Piglet, "If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you". And now, it seems as though Brits are having the same relationship with their furry friends as Pooh did with his chums in Hundred Acre Wood.

According to new research from the hotel chain Travelodge, more than one third of all British adults still take a teddy bear to bed with them. It seems that we can’t cope with lying on our mattress alone and that one in three of us have to nod off alongside a furry companion. The survey of 6,000 British adults found that a third of us still cuddle a soft toy when falling asleep.

And it is not just in our own bed where we feel we need the company of a much loved childhood toy.
The survey also revealed that one in four men take their teddy bear away with them on business trips because it reminds them of home. A staggering 25% of those polled said that they packed a cuddly toy with them when they went away on business. Common reasons for sharing beds with toys were that it reminded men of home and that it helped them nod off to sleep.

Childhood soft toys

The research also found that more than half of us still have a childhood soft toy even in later adult life. The average age of these teddy bears was 27 years, according to the 6,000 Brits polled. Whilst we may be filling our lives with more and more expensive technological gadgets, it seems that over half of us still cherish the teddy that we grew up with.

The traditional teddy bear was the most popular cuddly toy among adults, with Winnie the Pooh second and Paddington Bear third.

Bears in beds evoke feelings of home

Corrine Sweet, a psychologist, said cuddling a teddy bear was an 'important part of our national psyche'. She said: "It evokes a sense of peace, security and comfort. It's human nature to crave these feelings from childhood to adult life. "It's not surprising, then, that taking a teddy bear on a business trip is popular. As a bedtime bear evokes feelings of home, warmth, and can help you nod off – just like in babyhood."

Leaving soft toys in hotel beds

Whilst many of us take our cuddly toys with us when we go away, it seems that many of us are also leaving our cherished childhood toys in hotel beds. Staff at Travelodge hotels have reunited a staggering 75,000 teddy bears and their owners in the past year.

Travelodge said: "Interestingly the owners have not just been children, we have had a large number of frantic businessmen and women call us regarding their forgotten teddy bear."

When Is The Right Time To Throw Out Your Mattress?

Mattresses tend to have manufacturer’s warranties of between one and five years but can last much
longer, as long as they are cared for and care instructions are followed.

But even the most cared for mattress looses its ability to support you. The tell-tell signs are obvious
when you think about it. Here are some tips that may help you:

A feeling of discomfort and stiffness after sleeping is the main indicator. When this feeling starts to
manifest itself in the lower back, then it is highly recommended that you change your mattress. This
is normally caused by a weakening of the spring unit in the mattress, or in the cases of foam mattress
gradual degrading.

Sometimes the mattress can become visibly unsuitable. The mattress will become lumpy and uneven
with the center of the bed showing visible signs of dipping and a ridge forming going down the middle.
This has to do with fillings as much as spring unit degradation. Fillings over time will become squashed
and in some cases loose consistency due to body moisture.

As mattresses can be seen to becoming unsuitable, hearing that they’re becoming unsuitable is
also a big indicator. Hearing creaking or strange noises coming from the mattress is not a good sign.
The springs are either becoming rusty or the binding of the springs may have finally given way thus
making the mattress less supportive and eventually uncomfortable. But don’t chuck the mattress out
immediately. Make sure the creaking is not coming from the bed base or the floor boards.

If you find yourself more refreshed after sleeping in a bed in a hotel or when visiting friends or family
can be an indicator it is time to get a new mattress. You may have gradually gotten used to a mattress
that has degraded over time and doesn’t offer you the sleep you once had with it. A break from the bed
can reveal that the mattress is haggard and needs replacing.

If you feel your mattress may need giving the heave-ho to, try out the Bed MOT at the sleep council
website: http://www.sleepcouncil.org.uk/BedAdvice/bed_mot.cfm.

Understanding Bed and Mattress Jargon

Shopping for a mattress or a bed can be daunting enough, trying to find the right style or
softness. As with everything in life, it can be complicated with phrases and terms which
may make sense to furniture sales staff, but is complete gobbledygook to the average shopper.

Here are some handy definitions for what the most popular jargon means:

Pocket Spring

This is a spring type where the coils are wrapped in fabric ‘pockets’ and then
glued or stitched together. This allows for the springs to react independently and give better
lower back support as well as preventing rolling in and rolling out when another person gets
onto the mattress. Check out our Pocket Spring mattresses.

Continuous Spring

This is another spring type, the next best thing to pocket spring. The coils
are linked top to bottom, instead of the normal left to right. This again prevents rolling in or
rolling out. Continuous Spring also tend to have smaller springs and a concentration of them in
the centre third of the bed giving focused support for the lower back.

Memory Foam

Sometimes called ‘Visco’ or ‘NASA Foam’ is a petroleum based foam with
mimetic properties. This allows the sleeper to be cocooned in the foam and is good for blood
circulation and overall body support. If you are prone to be warm in bed and use low tog
duvets, memory foam may make you feel warmer. However, this varies hugely person to
person and the vast majority of people do not find this problem.

Latex

Is an all-natural foam made from rubber tree sap. It gives similar or better support than
memory foam. However, unlike memory foam it doesn’t return to its original shape but keeps
the shape of your body. This may make the mattress look old, but is in fact better for your
comfort as it is a perfect mould for your best sleeping position. We stock a range of Latex mattresses.

Sprung Edge/Platform Top

These are two types of divan base. The Platform Top is the more
popular of the two, and is a divan base with a flat top made of wood. The Sprung Edge is found is higher end
models and is a divan base with a layer of springs on top of the base. This softens the mattress
and is more responsive.

Non-turn

If you see this in a mattress description, it means you never have to flip the mattress.
However, you still have to rotate the mattress head to toe as regularly as or more regularly than
traditional mattresses.

Lumbar support

This is where a mattress is designed with extra springs or edging to give
support specifically to the lumbar region of your body, which is above your hips and includes
your lower back.

Rod Edge or Edging

The mattress has a metal rod border going around the edge of the
mattress. This stabilises the mattress rim and allows you to sleep on more of the mattress, i.e.
right to the edge.

These are just some of the most popular terms you may come across. You should also be
aware that different manufacturers may use different terms for the same thing. Never be afraid
to ask what certain features mean but always research them as sales staff may only mention
the pros of a feature.
